According to Welsh rugby journalist Peter Jackson, he was offered a trial during the time of Moore, Peters and Hurst, but the idea of living so far from his village fill him with horror and he turned it down.

I grew up in Porthcawl where many of the greats of the 70s lived. I'd see them all around town and it was just normal. The Welsh number 8 was our window cleaner, and I'd pass Gareth Edwards every day as I walked to school and he drove to his insurance job. He would always give a wink and a wave.

I didn't get to meet Phil Bennet though, but what an incredible fly half he was. A true gent by all accounts.
